Entertaining
Savannah. GA
After
several days and nights enjoying the quiet Georgia marshlands, we passed Isle
of Hope where we stopped last year and cruised – well slugged against the
ripping tide – up river to tie at the docks below the River Street Market for a
couple days in this hospitable city. The attributes of this gem are well known.
It is a walkable city with shady streets and the famous squares every few
blocks. The dedication of preservation results in a sense that time has stood
still until a closer look reveals the clever re-purposing and rehab tricks. The
architecture inspired a few photos – just to give you a sample.
We walked and walked to earn the meals we
treated ourselves to – a visit to the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design)
restaurant, Gryphon, and the Boars Head Tavern where Steve can recommend their
Bumpo Punch – it eased all those pains endured by captains.
Our perch on the wall gave us a perfect seat
for the traffic in the Savannah River.
We had not noticed that this is one of the busiest harbors on the east
coast, but are here to testify that big BIG boats come in and out at a steady
pace. There is also a variety of other traffic
from the free ferries that buzz about all day (and fortunately not all night),
the tour boats like the Savannah Queen.
