Beautiful
Bald Head Island
Never having lived in the Carolinas, we had not heard of Bald Head Island before last
year when we stopped in Southport, NC.
Sadly the weather blew nasty then, so we decided not to make the 2-3
mile run down the Cape Fear River to Bald Head. (The FEAR in this river’s name
is not an accident!) This year, the weather gods looked more favorably on our
route and we booked ourselves into the island marina for a couple of days to
explore this gem accessible only by boat.
Most people come by the ferries that run twice and hour 7 AM to 11 PM
most days during the season, but we cruised in under our own power to be
greeted by the expert dock hand, Will, and tied to prime spot in the cozy
harbor. This island has only a few motorized vehicles so getting around is
mostly by foot, two wheels, or golf cart. The shaded “roads” are a treat – many homes here seem to be tucked into the trees and hidden among the natural
setting. Even the restaurants and shops blend seamlessly with the natural
environment. If the roads weren’t paved, it might feel like time has stood
still. This island housed a vital fort
during the Civil War as it protected the blockade runners’ access to the major
port of Wilmington. Remnants of the fortifications dot the island and the
lighthouse, Old Baldy, also is still standing. With brisk and sunny spring weather this
secluded treasure is a wonderful place for a bike ride, walk or nap.
