Pausing in Scituate

Pausing in Scituate

On a windy morning we left the protection of Boston Harbor and the outer islands to find some big waves and swells roaming the Atlantic.  Fortunately we had planned only a short run into Scituate and were grateful to find a calm harbor and secure mooring in this roomy and busy harbor. This is a cruiser friendly port with all manner of conveniences a few steps from the numerous dinghy docks, including a movie house, library, shops and banks. Besides walking the quiet streets, we took advantage of this stopover to visit the grocery and get a haircut plus catch up on paper work and other routine chores.  Fortunately, Scituate is a perfect place to spend an extra day waiting for the waters to calm down.

On to Massachusetts

On to Massachusetts
Gloucester is our first stop in MA – a visit to complete the dory race loop.  We took time to see the dory shop and the local home of a dory racing team to support the US side in the traditional dory races we watched in Nova Scotia.  There was time for a walk in this historic fishing town which still maintains a working waterfront although these days tourism is almost as important as seafood.

A short run brought us to Boston Harbor and a mooring off Long Wharf.  This is our first visit here and we were lucky to enjoy several days of beautiful fall weather.  We started with a mini reunion of Peace Corps Group 42 hosted by Laurie Allen.  Thai food was the bonus to getting together with former volunteers Laurie, Bob, and Duncan after almost 40 years.

We also had time and sunshine to walk the streets of Boston – and enjoyed the Bunker Hill Monument, Beacon Hill, the Public Gardens, the Commons, Harbor Walks, and many markets. Even the harbor was a constant source of entertainment with ferries, freighters, and wide variety of touring boats.  Another visit here will be needed to do all the things we missed on this trip.

However, we were lucky to be in town to enjoy the FSU fans who flooded the streets to cheer for our team as they played Boston College - fortunately the best team won.
