Bound – landing in MAINE
A
more beautiful spot to reenter the states cannot be found than Northeast Harbor
on Mt Desert Island. (Mt Desert is pronounced more like “dessert” – but that is
a whole other story relating to the French early explorers!) Mt Desert is now home
to Acadia National Park with dramatic Cadillac Mountain, Somes Sound fjord, and
miles and miles of rocky shoreline.
Northeast is a quiet version of the hectic Bar Harbor conveniently
located a short Explorer Bus ride away.
Thanks largely to LLBean, the buses run around the park and the island
communities making this a very easy place to visit for those like us without
four wheels.
The
buses do accommodate two wheelers so we could have also taken advantage of the
carriage trails that lace the park.
However, we opted to do a little walking – a gentle trail skirts Elliot
Mountain connecting NE with Jordon Pond House – where their famous popovers and
tea (or Prosecco) can be had (and was) before walking the lake trail. After our physical exertions and therapeutic
chats with Suzanne and Marty from Alizann, we took one of those free buses back
to our dinks.
A
ranger led boat tour of the Cranberry Islands, the museum in Islesford and a
peek at Somes Sound Fjord might seem crazy for people who live on a boat, but
was educational as well as entertaining.
It
is easy to rusticate here almost in the style of those gilded age folks –
munching on fresh lobster harvested from the working boats just a few floats
away. We didn’t even mind that they left
for work at 0 dark 30…..
OK
Steve did not do much rusticating. He
washed and waxed his heart out – shining up Erben Renewal after our salty
crossing – 23+ hours from Cape Negro.
We did follow Alizann across and were
glad to enjoy a few more days of their company.
We a hoping to again see them down the line when they return from a “wedding
break” and head south.
Until then, in clean and shiny form, we are set to
wander in Maine, slowly heading toward the Big Apple by the end of the month….
