Mount
Desert and Acadia National Park
Making
a change from our last three summers where we travelled almost non-stop, we
scheduled a longer stop in Northeast Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. We spent a week here last year and knew it
was worth a longer visit. From Northeast
there is a free Ll Bean shuttle bus service into the Acadia National Park and
over to Bar Harbor as well as Southwest Harbor. The miles and miles of carriage
roads for biking and hiking trails are another big attraction as well as a bevy
of other Krogen friends in the harbor.
We spent a few days catching up with Sea Dweller and Changing Course who
we last saw on Long Island in the Bahamas in addition to meeting Jeremiah and
Sea Quill and waving at Iris, Ariel, Epilogue, Two Can.
On
our first weekend here, we dinked across to Southwest Harbor for a taste of
their Flamingo Fest. When we asked why “flamingos”,
we were told that those familiar Florida yard birds were invented by a
gentleman who summered on Mt Desert. The
Arts & Craft sale was cute – if more crafty than artsy, but the book sale
at the library was a deal. All their
books were priced to move – donate what you wanted and take as many as you
could carry. The cheese store and bakery in Southwest also did not disappoint.
We
also have managed a little walking and biking even with a few foggy and rainy
days for recovering knees. The heat wave
of 80 degree temps was not even a bother! Not a hardship to summer in Maine in
the vicinity of Acadia Park.

Welcoming Hokule to Somes Sound - a real fiord
A lovely area to spend the summer even if we lacked WIFI and Verzion to stay in touch.
