Eating
our way through Burlington
It
always helps to have friends! Since we
got two independent recommendations for Bistro Leunig we gave it a try and were
not disappointed. Duck Tacos and a
Salmon Entrée disappeared. After some serious retail therapy on Church Street
we stopped for a Chocolate Therapy pick-me-up at the flagship Ben and Jerry
store. The August First Bakery & Cafe was open early for breakfast sandwiches and warm bread.
There was also a visit to the City
Market – a local coop grocery store with an organic edge. But the best was the
Saturday Market – reputed to have 90 vendors, but that might be on a slow
day. The usual fresh produce was
plentiful as well as meat vendors, cheese stalls, wine, beer and craft liquor.
Then there were the bakeries and crafters all making this a multi-sensory
experience.
Although
restaurant and provision options were everywhere, there is more to Burlington
than food…. Shopping opportunities include unique Vermont crafts, maple
products, and originals like April Cornell. For the traditionalist there is
even a mall on the Church St marketplace with a Macy’s and most major national
retail stores. Besides getting our fill of shopping, we enjoyed the miles of
walking and biking trails bordering the harbor. It was easy to see why this is
rated one of the 10 best cities for retirees.
