Don’t you love a
bargain
Leaving Chattanooga with
overcast skies the river and weather robbed us of the full fall treatment. The
hills no longer popped with bright colors rather they reflected the gray sky
and rusty wintery browns. Surprisingly many trees had already lost their leaves
in just the few short days we were in Chattanooga. Having little recent experience with the fall
show, we were not prepared for this very limited season. The temps these days are full winter
according to our old bones.
On the way down river
we made different stops – catching a quiet anchorage behind Bridgeport Island
before stopping at Goose Pond Marina in Scottsboro, AL. We made the stop in
Scottsboro – primarily to visit the unclaimed baggage store located there. Its
40,000 square feet of shopping bargains culled from unclaimed airline baggage
is a major attraction here. Even Steve got excited looking at the website with
the list of categories which included dive gear and camp goodies. The reality
failed to overwhelm although we did score a few DVDs and several books. Using
the marina’s courtesy car – the best free vehicle yet - we drove through the
charming historic city square for some modern supplies at the local Wal-Mart
Superstore. Then, we settled in to enjoy some football on the excellent cable
provided by this city run marina. Since we are now behind most loopers who have
wisely boogied on south for warmer temps, we had the transient dock and this
lovely spot pretty much to ourselves – if we don’t count the hardy fishermen
who glided about as entertainment for the cats. The walking trail along the
inlet through the park also offered a little dry land exercise and a final
chance to admire the leaves before they all fall.
