Essential looper
technology
In planning for this
loopy adventure we discussed what essential electronic gadgets we might need in
addition to all the chart plotters already on board – multiples notice. On the possible list were a laptop or two, an
e-reader perhaps and of great debate, an Ipad. Yes, those chart plotters are
necessary and used on every cruising day, the laptop is fired up from time to
time, but the Kindle and Ipad are almost constantly on. We cannot imagine
traveling without these two essential gadgets.
Books almost instantly appear on both devices which keep us endlessly
entertained in those remote locations without radio or TV signals. The Ipad keeps us in touch with e-mail and
that ubiquitous google/internet – our source for all information. We left our camera behind – by mistake, and
used the Ipad and Iphone for the first several months to record our
adventures. Besides these we have a few
programs on the pad that have made our planning and navigating easier. Weather apps are near the top of the list as
we need to keep track of the forecast, wind direction and temperatures. We also access our favorite – Active Captain
– via the Blue Charts app for up to the minute reviews and details on anchorages
and marinas. This is one of those crowd applications that makes use of all the
users who contribute comments and information.
While we have several books like the Waterways Guides, these are sadly
dated even in the most current edition and skewed toward the marinas that
advertise in them. They also give precious little information about possible
anchorages. We only have one chip for the upper and lower chart plotters so
while the downstairs depth sounder was off (as in not functioning), the chip
was upstairs with the functioning depth sounder. We ran the boat with the Ipad charts until we
got to a dock or anchorage when Steve braved the elements and piloted from
above. Thus the Ipad is our back up independent navigation system. Blue Charts
also provides additional weather tools which give current conditions for wind,
radar, and waves. The Ipad is no longer a luxury item, but has become an
essential tool both for planning and while we are underway. She even has her own plug to keep her charged
thanks to master innovator, Steve. Steve
also uses her to read his Time magazine and play solitaire. And to think he was the one who doubted we
even needed this lovely little toy. We
may even upgrade her for a pad with more capacity as we find even more reasons
for lighting her up.
