Conquering
the Whale and a lunch stop at NO NAME CAY
Excellent
planning and help from the weather gods blessed us with an uneventful crossing
through the Whale Channel. This trip out
into the Mighty Atlantic and back into the Sea of Abaco is notorious for rages
which can make the trip through the narrow channel not only uncomfortable but
dangerous. Before crossing we spent a night gently rolling with swells from the
Atlantic on the north end of Great Guana Cay (behind that mega dock in Baker’s
Bay). Our goal was to be in a good position to cross the Whale and spend the
afternoon snorkeling the reefs. Not everyone agreed it was calm enough for a restful night, but the snorkeling was at least some compensation.
In
the morning, the tides dictated we leave early to cross the Whale but we could
not enter the channel at Black Sound until mid-tide rising late afternoon. So, a long mid-day stop at No Name Cay was
planned to include, snorkeling, beach combing and pig watching. A small herd of wild pigs are the only
residents on this cay. They have trained
the local tourists to visit with food scraps and march out eagerly when small
boats approach. Although we kept our
distance we later observed other boaters going ashore and getting much closer
to these beasties than we felt was wise…
Go figure – looks might be deceiving?
