Approaching Ottawa – at a snails pace

Approaching Ottawa – at a snails pace
Of course we did not travel directly from Burritt’s Rapids to Ottawa – we managed to make a few stops before hitting the big city. First we stopped at Hurst Marina for dinner at the Swan on Rideau – English Pub built as an authentic replica of its namesake in the UK with an array of local brews on tap.  We wandered on a short walk but did not actually make into the nearby village of Kars.

From there we stopped at the park adjacent to Long Island Locks where we biked back into Manotick – actually a suburb of Ottawa but a charming town with its own historical center.  Steve actually made two trips as my bike tire was flat when we pulled it out – PSE trekked in to the local hardware store for a new tube so I could go back and visit the mill and used bookstore.  We also toured the Dickenson House with guides in period garb.

the mill is still working!

Our next stop was Hartwell Lock just on the edge of Ottawa opposite Carlton University and a short bike ride into Little Italy where we had a Greek lunch!

Met Judy and Richard on the wall at Hartwells and they rode through the locks with us for fun.....

Then, we finally exited our final lock and cleared the Pretoria lift bridge, made the left turn in the canal to dock in the heart of Ottawa!
